Zanzibar’s Ministry of Health has begun discussions with the United States Embassy in Tanzania to implement a health sector cooperation agreement valued at approximately $3.1 billion (8.2 trillion Tanzanian shillings). The partnership aims to align international support with Zanzibar’s own health priorities, ensuring resources are used efficiently to improve healthcare services.
During a meeting in Zanzibar, Permanent Secretary Dr Mngereza Mzee Miraji said the agreement marks a significant step toward developing a clear implementation plan. He highlighted Zanzibar’s recent investments in healthcare, noting that the government has allocated nearly 130 billion shillings over the past five years and plans to spend 1.016 trillion shillings in the next five years. Dr Miraji stressed the importance of integrating external support with local efforts to avoid duplication and maximize impact.
Key areas of focus include strengthening human resources, laboratory services, and health information systems. Dr Miraji emphasized the need for skilled health professionals capable of adapting to technological advancements and evolving healthcare demands. The partnership is expected to enhance capacity in these areas while improving the systems required to deliver quality health services.
Jessica Greene, Head of the Cooperation Office at the US Embassy in Tanzania, led the US delegation and stated that the partnership would be guided by Zanzibar’s identified needs rather than external priorities. She said close cooperation between the Zanzibar Ministry of Health and the US Embassy would ensure systematic progress aligned with the agreement’s objectives.
The discussions are part of broader efforts to translate the Tanzania US health cooperation agreement into practical interventions at the local level. For Zanzibar, the partnership is expected to complement government investments by expanding access to expertise, technology, and resources in critical healthcare areas.
Both sides will continue consultations to identify priority areas and establish mechanisms for implementing the agreed programs. The cooperation comes as Zanzibar seeks to strengthen its health system through increased investment in infrastructure, human resources, laboratories, and modern health information systems.
